CDC released data on sexually transmitted diseases and New York is high on every list.
The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning Americans of the rising rate of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) across the country and particularly in New York City.
In the CDC’s 2015 Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Report released in Oct. 2016, the organization found there were 1.5 million cases of chlamydia, nearly 400,000 cases of gonorrhea, and almost 24,000 cases of primary and secondary syphilis reported in the country.
STD incidents include the following eight STDs:
Many cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis continue to go undiagnosed and unreported, and data on several additional STDs — such as human papillomavirus, herpes simplex virus, and trichomoniasis — are not routinely reported to CDC. As a result, the annual surveillance report captures only a fraction of the true burden of STDs in America.
All three diseases are curable with antibiotics, but gonorrhea is growing increasingly resistant to treatment with antibiotics.
However, it provides important insights into the scope, distribution, and trends in STD diagnoses in the country.
STDs are a substantial health challenge facing the United States. CDC estimates that nearly 20 million new sexually transmitted infections occur every year in this country, half among young people aged 15–24, and account for almost $16 billion in health care costs. Each of these infections is a potential threat to an individual’s immediate and long-term health and well-being. In addition to increasing a person’s risk for acquiring and transmitting HIV infection, STDs can lead to chronic pain and severe reproductive health complications, such as infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
Manhattan & Bronx Sexually Transmitted Infection Rates Are Startling. “Claiming the Most STD New Cases By Boroughs”
Sexually transmitted diseases are up across all of New York City in 2015, but they’re the highest in those two boroughs, according to the newest data released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Oct. 19.
In New York state, those numbers are all up as well. New York saw a rise of 4.9 percent in chlamydia cases, 9.3 percent in syphilis cases and 23.9 percent in gonorrhea cases. New York state is ranked 12th-worst in the country in chlamydia, 16th-worst in gonorrhea and 7th-worst in syphilis. All three are worse than the national average.
The CDC also breaks numbers down by county each year, meaning it’s possible to count the total cases by borough. The boroughs are only ranked through the top 70, however, and Staten Island doesn’t appear on any of the lists.
